"DULLINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL"

To the eternal memory of the men of DULLINGHAM who died in the service of their country
1 in the Boer War, 19 in the Great War of 1914-1919 and 3 in 1939-1945

Dullingham war memorial, in the churchyard of St Mary's, on the west side, facing the tower. A 3 metre high Celtic Cross on a tapering plinth 1.3 metres wide. It is a copy of St Martin's Cross on Iona. On the east face are revolving circles amongst which serpents intertwine. On the west face are scripture scenes surmounted by the infant Christ in a stable watched by an ox and and ass.

The inscription reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN NEVER DYING MEMORY/ OF THOSE DULLINGHAM SOLDIERS/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914 - 1919/ THAT WE BEING DELIVERED OUT OF THE/ HAND OF OUR ENEMIES MIGHT SERVE HIM/ WITHOUT FEAR ALL THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES"

Unveiled on 6th April 1920 it records the rank, forenames and surnames and dates of death of the fallen in chronological order of death on the north and south sides of the plinth, and on the west side are the rank, forename and surnames of the 5 men who fell in 1939-1945

War Memorials Trust gave £160.00 towards the cost of cleaning and repainting the black lettering in 1999 when the local community undertook a conservation project.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
